11-12/07/2009 - Melbourne City Tour

1st stop: University of Melbourne

i guess it would be quite creepy if this is taken at night..

if not mistaken, this big round picture on the floor is a clock...
u stand in the middle and see which direction ur shadow is and it will be the time...

we got a chance to take the tram in the city too! Unlike Brisbane, Melb have buses and trams. however i think the trams and their rails cause the roads in city become quite complicated.. they even have a rule that cars can stop in the middle of cross roads so that they can turn into another side.. weird weird weird~~

Anw, their transportation also quite expensive lo! We bought a card which can be used to take trams in city for 5 weekends, $15, meaning that $3 per day.. but it's just within city.. erm.. well in another way, they have 2 zones only, but brisbane have 13 or 14 zones, so the fee within a zone is definitely cheaper..

this is the city tram which is FREE: (it will bring u to most of the attractions around city)

inside the tram

On our way to UniMelb, we passed by RMIT.. I realised Uni of Queesnland is good in the case that it is compact in an area.. unlike RMIT and UniMelb, their campuses are scattering around city.. We can see RMIT's faculties everywhere when we walked in the city...

finally we reached University of Melbourne

imitating?
luckily no one realised us, sia sui nya~

The Old Quadrangle, oldest building in campus

looks a bit like the mini size of UQ's Great Court

2nd destination: Shrine of Remembrance!

It's a memorial for the Victoria's war and is currently available for exhibitions. The Shrine reserve covers around 13 hectares of land with parks, monuments and and some remembrance trees.. Remembrance tree is a tree with a name for it as a memorial for the person.

oh ya! it's free for admission! haha!

Inside the Shrine:

At the Shrine's balcony:
we can see the view of Melbourne city from here!
the wind was soooo strong~~

Guess who is who?

3rd destination: National Gallery of Victoria (NGV)

NGV is the oldest public art musuem in Australia. It exhibits a collection of fine art works from Asia, Europe and British. What's worth to mention is that the NGV has a piece of original art work from Picasso, 'Weeping Woman'. Haha, i'm not talented and artistic to admire this majestic painting!!

The water wall outside the NGV!

NGV is currently hosting 'Salvador Dali: Liquid Desire' as their Winter Masterpieces series. Since the exhibition was not free, we did not get to view Dali's artworks from his earliest year of 14 until his seventies. However i got a postcard of this exhibition:

'Soft self-portrait with grilled bacon' (1941)
oil on canvas
i don't know what it mean with the title....

this building is right outside the NGV.
it was said that the yellow colour rope on top of the building was made by goat skin..

4th destination: Crown Casino

Eureka Skydeck 88, a new high view platform in Melbourne to experience the world's first edge experience. It's the southern hemisphere highest viewing platform, located at riverside quay Southbank of Melbourne. We planned to go in and have a night view of Melbourne but gave up as it was too late for us to view both the evening and night view.

So we headed directly to the Casino...
This is the Yarra River, we were at Southbank when i took this picture..
*similar to Brisbane river and has a southbank too...*

evening view:

night view:

this showed the night view of Southbank from the Princes Bridge.
Princes Bridge is the 3rd bridge building on the oldest site, connecting Central Melbourne to Southbank.

If not mistaken, these were metal sculptures on Sandridge Bridge:

Finally outside Crown Casino:

I heard that the casino has performance every night, at 1st i thought it was fireworks but i realised i was wrong when i saw it! it was fire, not fireworks! hehe..

we can even feel the heat even though we were not standing very near to the torch.. 冷冷的天气, 吹来暖暖的风, 爽!!

erm.. i feel that it was quite a waste to use gas in this way.. they have the performance every night, the fire was produced by gas. Everytime they have such performance, it used up a large amount of gas, and i really think it's not enviromental friendly.. the most important thing is that, it's not that great anw...

Entering the casino:

The casino was so big compared to the Brisbane one... we spent almost a night inside to observe the gamblings.. learnt a lot from Samantha, she looked so experienced and explained many rules to us.. of cz we did not play la! no money to lose..

5th destination: city night walk

Federation Square
it was known as a cultural precicnt, with many modernized buildings..
it consist of art galleries, exhibition spaces, restaurants, bars, etc.

The Ian Potter Centre of NGV Melbourne
a new home of Australian heart

Flinders Street Station
one of the main railway station
